Locals pull their weight at nationals
TWO golds and a silver were the result of three locals taking on the best weightlifters in Australia last weekend.
Leanne Knox, Bernadette Porter and Nathan Sainsbury travelled to Melbourne on July 6 for the Australian Masters Weightlifting Championships.
Leanne, the Whitsunday Weightlifting Club’s coach, returned with first place in the 40-44 63kg category and the 35-44 year overall champion prize.
Not content with dominat- ing two categories, Leanne was also named the Champion of Champions for being the best female lifter at the competition.
Leanne also broke her clean and jerk record by 1kg (88kg).
Nathan Sainsbury won gold in the 35-39 105kg+ category, lifting a new Personal Best.
Sainsbury recorded a 120kg clean and jerk which was especially rewarding considering the time and effort he has put in training for the event.
Bernadette finished second in the 40-44 63kg category and recorded two PBs.
Bernadette had an impressive six successful lifts on the day, as the trio unquestionably put the Whitsunday club on the map at a national event.
This weekend Chelsea Nicol, Lillian Poles, Corey Smith, Leah Hannant and Lily Wilson will contest the Youth National Championships in Brisbane.
“I think they’ll do well. They’re all in the running for medals,” coach Leanne said.
