Lo­cals pull their weight at na­tion­als

TWO golds and a sil­ver were the re­sult of three lo­cals tak­ing on the best weightlifters in Aus­tralia last week­end.

Leanne Knox, Ber­nadette Porter and Nathan Sains­bury trav­elled to Mel­bourne on July 6 for the Aus­tralian Mas­ters Weightlift­ing Cham­pi­onships.

Leanne, the Whit­sun­day Weightlift­ing Club’s coach, re­turned with first place in the 40-44 63kg cat­e­gory and the 35-44 year over­all cham­pion prize.

Not con­tent with dom­i­nat- ing two cat­e­gories, Leanne was also named the Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons for be­ing the best fe­male lifter at the com­pe­ti­tion.

Leanne also broke her clean and jerk record by 1kg (88kg).

Nathan Sains­bury won gold in the 35-39 105kg+ cat­e­gory, lift­ing a new Per­sonal Best.

Sains­bury recorded a 120kg clean and jerk which was es­pe­cially re­ward­ing con­sid­er­ing the time and ef­fort he has put in train­ing for the event.

Ber­nadette fin­ished sec­ond in the 40-44 63kg cat­e­gory and recorded two PBs.

Ber­nadette had an im­pres­sive six suc­cess­ful lifts on the day, as the trio un­ques­tion­ably put the Whit­sun­day club on the map at a na­tional event.

This week­end Chelsea Ni­col, Lil­lian Poles, Corey Smith, Leah Han­nant and Lily Wil­son will con­test the Youth Na­tional Cham­pi­onships in Bris­bane.

“I think they’ll do well. They’re all in the run­ning for medals,” coach Leanne said.
