Missing money repaid

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A WHITSUNDAY man who stole more than $30,000 from his former employer has been sentenced to two years jail, suspended for three years.

Murray Henry Thomas Walter Garner was working at a local hotel when he stole amounts of $29,858.52 and $2099.40 between November 23, 2013, and August 26, 2014.

The 41-year-old financial controller had been making payments to himself on behalf of his employer, the Proserpine Magistrate’s Court was told.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Smith said the inconsistent transactions made to a personal account were identified on August 26, 2014.

She said an audit was then completed, which also resulted in the discovery of a $2099.40 withdrawal from petty cash.

Defence barrister Harvey Walters said Garner hadn’t spent the money and had now paid it back in full.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said this was a significant breach of trust but took into account the “unusual” circumstances.
