Local runner the early favourite for festival

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

RUNNING: Hamilton Island’s Steve Jackson is one of the favourites for next month’s Cruise Whitsundays Airlie Beach Running Festival halfmarathon.

The Whitsunday Running Club member and avid triathlete has won the event numerous times and is tipped to head the pack come July 19.

“When I compete, I am always focused on doing my best and if I win, it’s a bonus,” he said. “If I don’t win, then it wasn’t meant to be and I am just happy to have participated and done my best. It’s not always about winning but about the enjoyment and experience.”

The half-marathon is part of the Athletics North Queensland Half Marathon Series – a five-race competition – so the Airlie Beach Running Festival is expected to host some high-quality runners keen on winning the series.

Cruise Whitsundays is the event’s major sponsor and CEO Nick Hortle said the festival would be attractive for both locals and tourists. “Many of our staff participated in last year’s event, either individually or as a team, and this year’s event has at least four teams competing. It’s one of Australia’s most scenic running courses,” he said.

The event includes the 21.1km (half-marathon) race and various team events.

“Grab your shoes, get out there and train for any of the distances from 5km to halfmarathon. It’s only a decision away and it could change your life,” event organiser Wendy Downes said.
