NQ run title for Steve Jackson
HAMILTON Island’s Steve Jackson has secured the NQ Half Marathon Series title after a strong performance in Townsville on the weekend.
Jackson finished 11th in the 500-strong field and now boasts an unassailable lead with one race remaining in the series.
Jackson has run in Ayr, Mackay and Airlie before the weekend’s event in Townsville, and cannot be overtaken on the series leader board because points are tallied from your best four races – despite the fact there’s still a race in Cairns to be run.
The Townsville event features the second oldest marathon in Australia, and the festival also includes half-marathon, 10km, 5km and corporate runs. Fellow local Nicola Young took on her first marathon and handled the hot conditions admirably to finish in 4:49.
Mark McConkey was his usual steady self, sneaking in for a time of 1:50.57. He was pipped by fellow club member, Julia Wheway, whose 1:47.02 was good enough for fourth in her division. At the shorter, sharper end of the event, triathlete Kyle Pevitt-Scott of Hamilton Island used the Townsville 10km as part of his preparation for the upcoming triathlon season, running a sharp 43.10 for the journey.
Justin Knight-Gray also scurried home, clocking 20.06, which was good enough for fifth overall in the 5km event.
