Ramp up to 2015 SI Rendezvous
PREPARATIONS are now in full swing for the Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club Rendezvous, held in the Gloucester Passage annually in the last weekend of August.
SICYC members from all over the world, or “Shaggers” as they are affectionately known, are arriving in the Whitsundays en masse.
Those not competing in Airlie Beach Race Week were warmly welcomed to the region at an SICYC Friends and Family BBQ, held at the Abell Point Marina north village on Sunday.
There was a special address from SICYC founder and “Vice Commodore” Ken Thackeray to thank the 50 or so members that attended, along with major sponsors Abell Point Marina, Oceanic Marine Risk Insurance and also Shingley Beach Resort.
Live music played on throughout the afternoon, courtesy of local musician Jan, who originally hails from Germany.
Meanwhile SICYC members cooked a barbeque lunch and shared a laugh and a cold beverage or two in the beautiful winter Whitsunday weather.
Abell Point Marina spokesman Luke McCaul said all attendees were very much looking forward to the upcoming Rendezvous.
“Last year 220 boats attended the event with more expected this year,” he said.
The Rendezvous will take place from August 27-30. As well as a “fun” event it is a major fundraiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. For more information see www.sicyc.com.au.
