Gravity Enduro event gets bike riders pumping
The Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club has successfully hosted their first Gravity Enduro race on the Conway Circuit at the weekend.
Thirteen riders from Townsville and Mackay joined the local club riders on an extremely challenging course on Sunday, which involved cycling to the top of the Honey Eater lookout before racing to the bottom then having to turn around and ride all the way back to the highest point on the trail again.
The style of riding was Gravity Enduro, which means participants are not timed when they cycle to the top of each climb but are timed when they race down to the bottom. The lowest cumulative time for the two descents determined the overall victor.
In the competition class, Townsville’s Tim Norton claimed top honours while local riders Josh Lock and Ben Roe rounded out the podium.
In the sport class it was again a Townsville competitor who triumphed.
Paul Frewell took line honours while Chris Moore (Mackay) and Garry Juss (Townsville) finished second and third.
“It was an absolutely fantastic day of riding with the local club really putting in a huge effort over the past few months to bring the trails up to an excellent riding standard and to put on such a wonderful and enjoyable event that ran without incident,” Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club secretary Chris Labes said.
Talks are already under way with Townsville to potentially include this race as one of the stages for their series next year, which would see the Conway Circuit race multiply in size.
Meanwhile, the Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club is calling on the community to deter illegal motorbike use on the Conway Circuit after two riders were caught on the trail, ignoring closure signs.
“The countless hours of hard work our members put into maintaining this trail can be wrecked in seconds by this illegal and reckless behaviour,” Labes said.
“Please join us on pushbikes instead, we always welcome more members.”
