Ju­nior golf open comp at­tracts large field

The re­gion’s best ju­nior golfers have duked it out on the golf course for the Proser­pine Ju­nior Open at the week­end.

Seventy-five play­ers teed off on Satur­day, with golfers com­ing from Rowes Bay, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Mackay, Pi­o­neer Val­ley, Mo­ran­bah, Dysart and Clermont.

Karl Neil­son was the cham­pion on the day, carding a tremen­dous gross score of 76.

The lo­cal start of the day was Proser­pine’s Matt Bower, who won the B-grade ti­tle with 91.

The other lo­cal stars were the three-hole boys, who scooped the pool of prizes.

Sam Cre­tan took home best gross score hon­ours with his round of 21 while Rian Mitchell (24) was sec­ond.

The best net score went to Finn Burke (35) from Max Perrin (28), while Rian Mitchell and Lu­cas Cre­tan also claimed long­est drive and near­est-the-pin prizes.

In other news, it was a bat­tle of the Neils on Sun­day at the Proser­pine Golf Club.

The ver­sus par event saw Neil Cawthorne edge out Neil Ustick on a count­back af­ter both play­ers carded im­pres­sive scores of +5.

In the field of 50 play­ers, the ball run­down com­prised Mar­lene Gray (+4), Travis Clinch, Kelvin Stephens (+3), El­speth Scot­ford, Michael Cragg, Perri Simp­son, Scott Grigg (+2), Pas­cal Ne­un­reuther and Peter Lewis (+1).

Near­est-the-pins went to Mick Leo (no. 13) and Michael Ge­orge (16). Peter Fox thought he had his maiden NTP in the bag. How­ever, the mark­ers weren’t set for the front nine holes, deny­ing him the prize.

A good field of 55 play­ers turned out on Thurs­day for a sta­ble­ford event, with di­vi­sion one go­ing to Nathan Holmes, who carded 41 points.

The di­vi­sion one run­down in­cluded Michael Ward (40), Chris Doblo (38), Trevor Paroz, John Roser and Mark Thompson (36).

Fin­bar O’Flynn was the di­vi­sion two cham­pion, win­ning with a score of 41 from Tim McBride (39), Les Brad­ford (38), An­drew Al­bergo, Mike Ge­orge (36) and Dave Gates (35).

The nine-hole com­pe­ti­tion went to Nathan Holmes (22) ahead of Michael Ward (21), Tim McBride, Joe Tay­lor (20), Tom Flem­ing and Alan Scott (19).

Near­est-the-pins went to Chris Doblo (no. 2), John Roser (9), Bill McMaster (13) and Tim McBride (16).

This Satur­day play­ers con­test the Monthly Ho­tel Metropole Sta­ble­ford.
