Junior golf open comp attracts large field
The region’s best junior golfers have duked it out on the golf course for the Proserpine Junior Open at the weekend.
Seventy-five players teed off on Saturday, with golfers coming from Rowes Bay, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Mackay, Pioneer Valley, Moranbah, Dysart and Clermont.
Karl Neilson was the champion on the day, carding a tremendous gross score of 76.
The local start of the day was Proserpine’s Matt Bower, who won the B-grade title with 91.
The other local stars were the three-hole boys, who scooped the pool of prizes.
Sam Cretan took home best gross score honours with his round of 21 while Rian Mitchell (24) was second.
The best net score went to Finn Burke (35) from Max Perrin (28), while Rian Mitchell and Lucas Cretan also claimed longest drive and nearest-the-pin prizes.
In other news, it was a battle of the Neils on Sunday at the Proserpine Golf Club.
The versus par event saw Neil Cawthorne edge out Neil Ustick on a countback after both players carded impressive scores of +5.
In the field of 50 players, the ball rundown comprised Marlene Gray (+4), Travis Clinch, Kelvin Stephens (+3), Elspeth Scotford, Michael Cragg, Perri Simpson, Scott Grigg (+2), Pascal Neunreuther and Peter Lewis (+1).
Nearest-the-pins went to Mick Leo (no. 13) and Michael George (16). Peter Fox thought he had his maiden NTP in the bag. However, the markers weren’t set for the front nine holes, denying him the prize.
A good field of 55 players turned out on Thursday for a stableford event, with division one going to Nathan Holmes, who carded 41 points.
The division one rundown included Michael Ward (40), Chris Doblo (38), Trevor Paroz, John Roser and Mark Thompson (36).
Finbar O’Flynn was the division two champion, winning with a score of 41 from Tim McBride (39), Les Bradford (38), Andrew Albergo, Mike George (36) and Dave Gates (35).
The nine-hole competition went to Nathan Holmes (22) ahead of Michael Ward (21), Tim McBride, Joe Taylor (20), Tom Fleming and Alan Scott (19).
Nearest-the-pins went to Chris Doblo (no. 2), John Roser (9), Bill McMaster (13) and Tim McBride (16).
This Saturday players contest the Monthly Hotel Metropole Stableford.
