AIRLIE Beach has received the Golden Backpacker Award for the Best Destination in Australia and Best Visitor Attraction award for the second year running.

The awards were accepted by Deb and Tony Brown of True Blue Sailing, who attended the awards night in Sydney.

Ms Brown said it was a delight to live and work in the Whitsundays.

“We feel privileged to be voted the best, as Australia is full of beautiful locations, not just in Queensland,” she said.

“It was voted by the people, so the Whitsundays must be doing something right to win it a second year running.”

Gabby Shaw from Whitsunday Sailing Adventures was also proud to call the Whitsundays home.

“The region sells itself, we just provide the transport,” she said.

Tanya Cran of BIG4 said the hard work from the team at the resort stemmed from its passionate owners, the McKinnon family, who have owned and operated the resort for the past 22 years.

“We feel very honoured to have received this award for being the number one hotel in Airlie Beach and so well placed in both Queensland and Australia, through Trivago guests,” she said.

Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited General Manager of Tourism, Rebecca Nicol said these awards showed how well the Whitsunday brand was being received nationally and internationally, through a combined effort from all.

“Hats off to all the businesses here who have helped make the Whitsundays the best destination,” she said.

“Thanks to our local tourism operators, transfers and transport, the airport operators and of course, all the retail and hospitality businesses that help create the Whistundays image.”
