Airlie Beach retains Bluck Shield
Twenty-two ladies from Airlie Beach and Proserpine stepped onto the bowling green to contest the annual Betty Bluck Shield.
The winning team comprised of Doreen Peadon, Jenny Ryder and Di Dobbins, who defeated Proserpine’s Heather Brown, Joy Jeffries and Norma Daniels 32-22.
Henny Tattam, Margaret Heeney and Elaine Kippen also won their triples’ game on the day, posting a 24-20 win over Heather Patullo, June Blair and Lillian Harris.
In the final game, Airlie’s Jill Spencer, Lane Telford and Connie Reimers succumbed to Maree Daffara, Lois Read and Fran Porter 20-15.
Airlie won the day overall, holding onto the shield until the next challenge thanks to their nine-point victory.
In other news, men’s bowls got off to a good start despite the hot weather, with 11 players on the green. The winners of the money were Peter Lawton, John Sladek and Rick Brunell, who knocked over Steve Tattam, David Stock and Herb Secomb 36-20.
The other triples’ team, con- sisting of Nik Fernbach, Bruce Purdie and double-lead Dom Sposato, scored a dominant 32-7 win over John Ryan, Keith Dunn and Dom Sposato.
On Sunday, 16 players took part in social play but the jackpot was not won.
The club’s Cruise Whitsundays Carnival will be held in Airlie Beach this Saturday, with a wealth of great prizes.
