Junior skippers impress elders
ON SATURDAY, the Whitsunday Sailing club held its annual Embroidery Plus Junior Skippers Race and what a great afternoon of racing it proved to be.
This series has the club’s off beach junior racers take the helms of the offshore racing boats, with the young skippers never failing to impress the older sailors with their helming skills.
The series consisted of two races run over a triangular course, with the second race going into the start sequence minutes after the last boat crossed the finish line from race one.
The juniors had to work hard during the afternoon and in race one, Hamish Swain ( Twister) and Josh Towle ( Huahine) had a close race, with Huahine managing to break away on the second leg finishing 50 seconds ahead.
Siblings Jess and Luke Pegg shared the helming on Cross
bow and enjoyed tight tactical racing against Ned Sleight and Cameron Brown on Anthea, with Jack Opie on La Quilta finishing last. In race two, Hamish nailed the start, and placed Twister in a commanding lead over the fleet. Josh pushed hard on
Huahine, but only managed to sneak past his rival on the final downwind leg, with a second between the two in what was an incredibly close race.
Jess and Luke on Crossbow also had a nail-biting time, competing against Ned and Cameron on Anthea, with a mere 10 seconds separating the two at the finish in Cross
bow’s favour. Seabeea Milliken and Bonnie Syme helmed La Quilta in the race, and did a fantastic job skippering the heavy Moody.
Rear Commodore Offshore, Kevin Fogarty, thanked not just the junior skippers, but also the boat owners for handing their boats over to the youngsters.
“It is great to see our offshore fleet keen to help our junior off beach kids and hand over the helms to them,” he said.
“It is a testament to the off beach training that these young ones actually sail our boats as good as, if not better than we do.”
Presentations were held at the club, where Embroidery Plus awarded caps to all competitors and vouchers for Marlin Marine to the winners.
