Off beach winners to be decided in a week

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

WITH only one week remaining in the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s off beach summer series, all participants were very keen to perform well and earn points last weekend.

Conditions were tricky, with the south-east winds increasing from 10 knots to gusts of 25 knots at times

Luke Mairs won the first race but a broken universal joint on his rudder put him out of further contention for the day.

Hamish Swain, sailing a Laser 4.7, fought it out around the course with Cam Brown, sailing a Laser radial rig.

It was an evenly matched contest, with Hamish winning race 2 and Cam winning race 3.

Ned Sleight, Tessa Munster and Stuart Applegate capsized several times but all three managed to sail their boats very well around the course.

In the Junior division, Seabreea Milliken won race 1 while Erin Applegate won races 2 and 3.

Zac Sleight was well in contention until he capsized downwind. Zac nonetheless managed to right his boat and finished all three races.

Training and racing continues at the end of this week, with a barbecue and presentations for the summer series on the lawns of the Whitsunday Sailing Club.

GUSTY CONDITIONS: It was a blustery start for the off beach racers.
