Argument at pub

Whitsunday Times - - PROSERPINE MAGISTRATE’S COURT -

AN ARGUMENT at the Dingo Beach Hotel has led to a 38year-old local man being fined $1000 for assault occasioning bodily harm.

Richard Ben Wheeler was chatting to a woman who had previously worked with him, at about 3.35pm on October 12.

As the conversation became heated, he struck the victim across the neck and she fell to the floor, resulting in a broken rib and dislocated coccyx.

Duty lawyer Antoinette Morton said Wheeler did not mean to strike the victim and was remorseful.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said in cases like these there was always two versions of the story.

“You describe it to me one way but the complainant describes it differently. The $1000 fine reflects the seriousness of the offence.”
