AN EVENING of stupidity has led to a 17-year-old being placed on probation for three years.

Cody Allan Washington-Bail don was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and entering premises with intent, after he broke into the Proserpine Golf Club, on October 26.

At about 9 pm Washington-Bail don and a 10- year-old companion forced entry into the club and used an angle grinder to try and get into the safe.

A security guard arrived and Washington-Baildon hit him with a jimmy bar.

Duty lawyer Antoinette Morton said Washington-Baildon was “originally looking for pies, chips and ice creams” but, when he saw the safe and angle grinder in the same room, it was opportunistic.

“(And) he is extremely remorseful for the injuries to the guard,” she said.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said he was giving Washington-Baildon the benefit of the doubt due to his young age but noted it was a “very high level of stupidity”.

“This is a very serious offence where you were armed with an offensive weapon,” he said.

Washington-Baildon also had to pay $605 restitution for

damage to the safe.
