NETBALL STAR SHOOTS INTO HAMO
Hamilton Island has hosted the stars in recent times but this weekend the holiday destination will be graced by one of Australia’s premier sporting starts.
Australian Diamonds’ captain Laura Geitz is set to host a series of netball clinics for guests and residents on Saturday.
Geitz has enjoyed a magical 2015, captaining both the Queensland Firebirds to the ANZ Championship and the Diamonds to the World Cup.
Playing goal keeper, Geitz has been instrumental in the success of both programs, left with the onerous task of shutting down the world’s most formidable shooters.
All this, after pre-season knee surgery had left the inspirational leader’s future in doubt.
And whilst flirting with retirement following the Diamonds’ narrow three-goal win over perennial sparring partners New Zealand, Geitz has decided to continue on with the Queensland Firebirds – hoping for a golden send-off with victory at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Her immediate future is about sharing her love for the game with her legion of fans, which includes this weekend on Hamilton Island.
Geitz will host three clinics targeting different age groups and abilities.
The first of the clinics at 9am at the Hamilton Island Sports Club is for children aged nine and under, the second session (10am) is for children aged 10-12 and the final clinic (11am) is for open age netball fans.
While the clinics are free for guests of Hamilton Island resort properties, they are open to residents, day visitors and guests for $10 per person.
All three sessions will run for an hour, with an increasing amount of court as the age and ability rises.
Geitz will be available for questions, photos and autographs at the conclusion of oncourt time each session.
