A TOTAL of 29 local heroes were acknowledged across the Whitsunday region at this year’s Australia Day celebrations in Proserpine, Bowen and Collinsville.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney congratulated all the winners and said it was an honour to present awards to Whitsunday locals in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the community.
“The awards are a gratifying part of Australia Day, each year allowing us the opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Whitsunday citizens,” she said.
“Our award winners come from all walks of life and have excelled in different areas, but they all share a common com- mitment to the local community and represent excellence in our region.
Cr Whitney said it was easy to feel inspired when hearing of the hard work and dedication displayed by all of this year’s winners.
“And it encourages others to think about how they can make a contribution to creating a better community,” she said.
“It’s ordinary people doing extraordinary things and all are very worthy of being 2016 Australia Day Award winners.”
Cr Whitney said she also wanted to congratulate the nominees and thank everyone who took the time to submit a nomination for this year’s regional Australia Day awards.
WARM WELCOME: Australia Day was also about welcoming new citizens who pledged their allegiance alongside mayor Jennifer Whitney in Proserpine.
