Early Aus­tralia Day scorcher at Prossie bowls

BOWLS: On Sun­day, a lit­tle breeze mod­er­ated what was nearly a siz­zling hot day in Proser­pine.

With Aus­tralia Day fall­ing on a Tues­day this year, club mem­bers de­cided to hold their Aus­tralia Day so­cial bowls on Sun­day to al­low ev­ery­one to also at­tend the cel­e­bra­tions around town.

The sun shone down fairly re­lent­lessly on those par­tic­i­pat­ing but there was none­the­less some won­der­ful bowls played by the 26 peo­ple who took part.

Philip Brown, Lois Read and Barry Zill­mann snuck ahead on the last end to de­feat Neil Robert­son, Wendy Pomeroy and Shane May 2521.

Lil­lian Har­ris, Patsy Black (vis­i­tor) and Kevin Thoro- good drew 18-all with Fran Porter, Sandy Daf­fara and Heather Brown.

Lu Lu Simp­son, Dot Hin­schen and Shane Spann de­feated Trudy Hanne, Dan Robin­son and Maree Daf­fara 19-14.

Caitlin Daely (vis­i­tor), Lor­raine Da­ley, John Hen­der­son and Ross Reville de­feated Colleen Wil­liams (vis­i­tor), Jeanette Cal­way, Vicki Spann and Wayne Han­d­ley 18-8.

The Sun­day tro­phy draw was de­cided on the most ends won.

Ross Reville’s team won this with 14 ends.

There is a new Su­per Satur­day men’s com­pe­ti­tion start­ing on Satur­day, with a three bowl pairs for­mat.

Names must be in by 1.30pm for a 2pm start.

Teams will be de­ter­mined by a ran­dom draw.

Mem­bers and non-mem­bers are wel­come.

In the ladies divi­sion, the club thanked those who brought along damper for Sun­day’s Aus­tralia Day mixed so­cial bowls.

For those suf­fer­ing with­drawal symp­toms, the break from Wed­nes­day bowls is quickly com­ing to an end.

The next com­mit­tee meet­ing is on Mon­day, Fe­bru­ary 8, at 2pm.

Ladies bowls will be be­gin­ning back on Wed­nes­day, Fe­bru­ary 17.

Nom­i­na­tions are now open for all club com­pe­ti­tions.

All com­pe­ti­tion nom­i­na­tions will then close on the club’s of­fi­cial open­ing day, Wed­nes­day, March 2.
