Barra on the bite as season in river opens
There have been good tides at the islands this week, with good numbers of trout and grassy sweetlip being caught.
There are still some big mackerel being caught around places like Nara Inlet, Dolphin Point and Mackerel Bay.
The fish are fairly deep, so try live baiting and jigging.
The shoals have been fishing quite well for nannygai and red emperor, for those who can get out.
Don’t forget to leave a floater out for cobia, as there’s still plenty of them around.
In Shute Harbour, try heading out very early in the morning for some nice giant trevally, with some nice queenfish mixed in among them.
Live herring have been working well.
Whisper Bay and Abell Point rockwalls have seen some excellent grunter caught this week.
They’ve been catching them on peeled prawns, garfish fillets or plastic vibes.
In the same areas, fishing late in the afternoon and at night with live baits has seen some very good barramundi being landed.

With the very neap tides and the opening of barramundi season, the river has been fishing very well.
Good numbers and sizes of barra are being caught, along with plenty of threadfin salmon getting around.
Bait fishing for grunter on the muscle beds is also paying off.
Keep in mind there’s a lot of box jellyfish in the river at the moment, so be careful cast netting.
The crabs have been patchy at the moment, but if we get some rain towards the end of the week it should stir them up.
The dam has been fishing exceptionally well this week.
A lot of guys have been trollin up some good numbers of barra in the main basin area using deep diving lures.
Good numbers of fish are holding on the long weedy point that comes out from the southern end of the dam, known locally as Fausty’s Point.
Try using soft plastics and surface lures. Dayne Thompson, Proserpine Bait and Tackle
