Community speaks on price of our rates

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

MANY across the Whitsundays would have awoken to an unwelcome letter this week.

The second instalment of the 2015–16 half yearly rates notices were issued across the region on Monday.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said residents could cut the cost of their bill by paying in full by the due date, earning a 5% discount.

“The due date for payment of rates is Monday, February 29, 2016, and you need to pay by this date in order to get the 5% discount,” she said.

However, this didn’t stop 93% of respondents of an online poll run by the Whitsun-

day Times from saying Whitsunday Regional Council’s rates were too expensive.

Russell Rodgers of Airlie Beach made his opinion known via the Times’ webpage.

“The valuation component of the rates in the Whitsundays are four times that of Brisbane. Given a smaller regional council I would expect some difference but to me four times seems extortionate,” he wrote.

Rate payments can be made by any of the methods outlined on the rates notice including online at www.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au.
