THEY watched Martin Luther King’s “I had a dream” speech and William Wallace’s rousing call to arms from the film Braveheart.

The students of Whitsunday Christian College were then called up and presented to the school as leaders of 2016.

Melissa Hanrahan pinned a badge to their ties as doting parents took photos before the leaders were applauded by the whole school.

Jessica Cook was one student chosen to lead her peers and junior students.

She said she was excited about setting an example.

“I feel like, as Year 12 (students), we should be great examples to the younger kids because they do look up to us and follow what we do,” she said.

Ms Cook said leaders did not have to have the profile of Martin Luther King or William Wallace to make a difference.

“Everyone who is a good example every day is a leader too.”

Ms Cook said her role as a school leader would greatly benefit her once school finished at the end of the year.

“If you can have people listen to you and follow what you do. It is a good trait to have,” she said.
