Po­lice of­fi­cer caught drink-driv­ing at 0.2

A PO­LICE of­fi­cer was fined $1500 and dis­qual­i­fied from driv­ing for 10 months af­ter he was charged with driv­ing un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol while off duty.

Aaron Matthew Fitz­patrick de­liv­ered a blood al­co­hol read­ing of 0.206 af­ter po­lice were called to a crash in Be- gley St, Air­lie Beach, at about 10.30pm on De­cem­ber 20 last year.

De­fence lawyer Ms McPherson told the Proser­pine Mag­is­trate’s Court the 30-year-old father of two had joined the po­lice force in 2011 in Toowoomba be­fore mov­ing to Proser­pine.

She said per­sonal cir­cum­stances had seen him “drink­ing in ex­cess” but that oth­er­wise he had an ex­em­plary record and this was out of char­ac­ter.

“He has been stood down and will face po­lice dis­ci­plinary pro­ce­dures. His fam­ily, col­leagues and the com­muni- ty are very dis­ap­pointed in him and he is ashamed,” she added

Mag­is­trate Si­mon Young said as some­one who en­joyed a high level of trust in the com­mu­nity “you have breached that trust so I have to give con­sid­er­a­tion to mak­ing an ex­am­ple of you for the com­mu­nity”.
