Boxing kicks off at PCYC

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE PCYC have a special guest coming to teach boxing classes on Tuesdays, as Sam O’Malley from the Mackay PCYC travels up here to teach the classes.

Mr O’Malley may be better known to people for his appearance on hit television show The Biggest Loser; he was a contestant with his daughter. After losing all the weight on the program Mr O’Malley continued to pursue boxing to keep up his fitness. PCYC branch manager Sergeant John Dickinson said the classes would be great for any experience level.

“Our ultimate goal is to have some boxing tournaments between other PCYCs in our region. Boxing is currently offered in the Mackay, Blackwater and Rockhampton PCYCs, we’re one of the few that don’t offer it yet,” he said.

These classes will be affiliated with Queensland Boxing, which allows participants to progress all the way to the Olympics if they choose.

“We had boxing here a number of years ago and have been trying to reinstate it as we re- ceive more inquiries from the public asking for boxing classes.”

Boxing with Sam O’Malley will take place every Tuesday night from 6.30–7.30pm. Children aged eight years and up are welcome to attend, as are adults of all abilities and fitness levels.

Boxing is only open to PCYC members.

BOXING BEGINS: Trainer Sam O’Malley and his daughter, Jess, of Mackay, competed in The Biggest Loser.
