Fisherman located after he ‘got bushed’

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A BOWEN fisherman is counting his lucky stars this week, safely back ashore after his fishing dory became lost at sea on Saturday afternoon.

The fisherman activated his EPIRB around 4pm Saturday, with the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter, Bowen VMR, another fishing dory and the Australian Marine Safety Authority Cairns-based aircraft tasked with the search.

The dory wasn’t found until around 7.30pm, with AMSA’s aircraft relaying co-ordinates to the Bowen VMR rescue boat.

“The aircraft flying overhead gave our vessel co-ordi- nates to go to,” Bowen VMR radio operator Don Rose said.

“They saw a little light, and it was the light off his phone.

“That’s the only thing we found him by.

Mr Rose said the fisherman was not hurt.

“He was just bushed,” he said.

“(He got) disorientated due to the rain showers that were in the area.”

Mr Rose said the fisherman’s EPIRB had been a lifesaver, perhaps literally.

The dory was towed from Wallaby Reef back to Bowen by the VMR boat.
