Parkrunners brave rain for weekly fun

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

PARKRUN: Braving the gloom and rain, 23 intrepid parkrunners arrived at the Abell Point Marina to get their weekly dose of fun, fitness and family.

Before setting off on their 5km run Mathew Curr stood up and collected the February Airlie Beach parkrunner of the month award.

The sharp end of the run was hotly contested this week – the first five runners home all finished within almost a minute of each other.

First across the line in a time of 19:48 was new local parkrunner Jamie Jochheim.

Australian parkrun general manager Tim Oberg threw it all at the newcomer but had to settle for second this week, his trusty sidekick Humphrey the parkdog didn’t seem to notice.

Dawn-Michelle Romanella returned after a few weeks’ cycling to be third home and first woman over the line in a time of 20:47.

Hugh Burton, a visitor from England, put in a great effort to pip our event director Justin Knight Gray at the post for fourth and fifth.

Airlie Beach parkrunner stalwart Bob Barford would like to offer a special mention to the Burgers.

“Tanya pushed a soggy stroller home in style with daughter tucked up inside, safe and dry, while Dan brought the waterlogged turnaround flags home. Great job guys,” he said.

“A big thank you to the volunteers especially first-timer, Lachlan Barford.”
