WMDL shifts its focus to tourism in the region

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

IT WAS an historic moment for Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) on Friday afternoon, as its members voted to separate the organisation’s tourism operations from its economic development functions.

WMDL’s constitution will be amended to reflect the change to a solely tourism-focused organisation, be re- named Tourism Whitsundays, and adopt a new board structure.

This is an exciting time for Whitsundays tourism.

With the Easter weekend early this year and many operators fully booked, it should be a great start to the season.

I hope at the local elections this weekend, we will elect candidates that support tourism. Tourism provides 40% of all jobs in the region and for every dollar tourism earns it adds an additional 87 cents to other parts of the economy.

Per square kilometre, the Whitsundays drives more tourism expenditure that any other area of the GBR.

So it’s vital we have government representatives who understand and support that.

After the success of WMDL’s most recent Networking Night at Sorrento’s a few weeks ago, we are delighted to invite our members to the next Networking Night on Thursday, March 31.

Ray White Whitsunday will co-host the event at Reef Plaza, Cannonvale.
