Raiders run hot against pre­miers

RUGBY UNION: The Whit­sun­day Raiders have is­sued a chal­lenge to their Mackay Rugby Union ri­vals with a 35-0 de­mo­li­tion of reign­ing pre­miers Kut­tabul in their open­ing round clash at Quarry Hill on Satur­day.

The Raiders dom­i­nated the match from the out­set, rac­ing to a 20-0 lead by half-time be­fore go­ing on with the job in the sec­ond stanza.

Raiders play­maker Shan­non Wol­land said coach Ben Mathers’ game plan had worked a treat.

“Our game started re­ally well,” he said.

“The team were very fo­cused from the start.”

The Raiders for­wards took cen­tre stage early with Sam Hod­getts, Brooke Cadawaller, Madi­son French, Morty Sam­mutt and Bill Cross­ley im­press­ing while Ol­lie An­drews crossed for a try-scor­ing dou­ble.

Af­ter dom­i­nat­ing the first half the Raiders could have eas­ily re­laxed in the sec­ond term but Wol­land said they re­turned with a great mind­set and con­tin­ued to ap­ply pres­sure.

The Raiders will next play Bowen on Fri­day night with the match at Whit­sun­day Sportspark to kick-off at 7.30pm.
