Raiders run hot against premiers
RUGBY UNION: The Whitsunday Raiders have issued a challenge to their Mackay Rugby Union rivals with a 35-0 demolition of reigning premiers Kuttabul in their opening round clash at Quarry Hill on Saturday.
The Raiders dominated the match from the outset, racing to a 20-0 lead by half-time before going on with the job in the second stanza.
Raiders playmaker Shannon Wolland said coach Ben Mathers’ game plan had worked a treat.
“Our game started really well,” he said.
“The team were very focused from the start.”
The Raiders forwards took centre stage early with Sam Hodgetts, Brooke Cadawaller, Madison French, Morty Sammutt and Bill Crossley impressing while Ollie Andrews crossed for a try-scoring double.
After dominating the first half the Raiders could have easily relaxed in the second term but Wolland said they returned with a great mindset and continued to apply pressure.
The Raiders will next play Bowen on Friday night with the match at Whitsunday Sportspark to kick-off at 7.30pm.
WINNERS: The Whitsunday Raiders celebrate after the game against the Kuttabul Camelboks at the weekend.
