Brahmans continue their winning streak

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT - By Peter Carruthers

RUGBY LEAGUE: In the first game of the MDRL competition, the Whitsunday Brahmans picked up where they left off in 2015 – as winners.

But it was no cake walk for the A-grade side.

An error-riddled first half saw the Brahmans trailing the Leprechauns 4-10 going into the half-time break.

Coach James Webb at halftime urged his troops to play with more control and increase their completion rate.

This advice paid dividends during the second half.

The Brahmans dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half, scoring three unanswered tries.

The Leprechauns hit back with two of their own tries late in the half, bringing the margin to two points with 10 minutes to play.

Jack Briscoe crossed the line with only three minutes remaining to seal a Brahman victory – the final score being 28-20.

New recruit second rower Tim Bennett was a standout for the Brahmans, with a brace of tries to his name.

His fellow back rower Harry Wecker also celebrated his return to the top grade with a solid performance.

The team now looks forward to playing Souths at Mackay Stadium as the curtain raiser to the Cutters and Norths Intrust Super Cup clash.

In other games, Magpies impressed against Souths with a reasonably comfortable win, the Moranbah Miners defeated Sarina Crocodiles, and Wests beat Norths Devils in a cracker of a match.

HAMMERED: Try scorer Isaac Richardson gets mauled by the Leprechauns’ defence.
