The latest on the fire investigation from the Queensland Police:

Whitsunday Times - - FRONT PAGE -

AS soon as the ashes were cool enough to walk on investigators were on the ground at the scene of Sunday night’s inferno.

Police, insurance and Queensland Fire and Rescue investigators scoured the

rubble for any clue that may shed light on the reason for the ignition of the Whitsunday Shopping Centre.

On Tuesday afternoon at about 3.30pm the Queensland Police withdrew from the investigation concluding there was no evidence

to in- dicate the fire had been deliberately lit.

At that time demolition crews had already begun to collapse the southern wall and Island Dr

remains closed to all traffic – including pedestrian – in preparation for the demolition of the western wall of the target building.

It is not known when shops unaffected by fire will be given the chance to reopen. Most stores have been without power since Sunday night.
