Jetcat to revolutionise rescues

Innovator launches prototype in C’vale

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

STEVE Jandt’s Jetcat rescue boat is set to revolutionise swift water rescue operations if it is able to navigate beyond the prototype phase.

Mr Jandt was at the VMR boat ramp in Cannonvale yesterday to pitch his boat to State and Federal Government representatives.

The 6.9m dual-hull, jet-propelled vessel is capable of turning on coin, is laid out to maximise deck space, and is equipped with water level access to facilitate easy retrieval of unconscious victims.

Mr Jandt built the boat at his Cannonvale workshop.

He has sought feedback from State Emergency Services personnel and Volunteer Marine Rescue crews and he said they were impressed with the boat’s ability on the water.

“We have got such a good reaction to it from the guys in the field,” he said.

“It’s received 100% endorsement and the SES has even given me a letter of recommendation for the Jetcat.”

The boat is still in the prototype phase of its development and will need the approval of State and Federal governments before it is able to augment existing craft operated by the SES and VMR.

Mr Jandt said the boat would not take the place of ex- isting craft but was designed specifically for floodwater rescue.

“It’s stable, it can be deployed in floodwaters and it’s extremely manoeuvrable so you can get it into really tight places,” he said.

“It can be used for a lot of different operational activities and I would like to see this out there saving lives.”

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen was at the prototype’s launch yesterday and said the Jetcat had his full support.

Mr Christensen said he had written to Bill Byrne, State Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, to ask him to facilitate a demonstration of the Jetcat in Brisbane.

“I’m keen to encourage innovators like Steve Jandt who, when faced with a slowing of work for his custom-designed catamarans, took something he’s had on the drawing board for a long time and turned it into a new opportunity,” he said.

Mr Jandt has already allowed rescue crews from the Whitsundays to trial his rescue cat.
