A PHOTO of a shark in the marina at Airlie Beach has caused a bit of a frenzy after the online image was shared hundreds of times.

“It was spotted Sunday,” Outrigger Whitsunday president Nick Bellinger said.

Mr Bellinger said a parent of one of the junior paddlers took the photo.

“We don’t often sight them, but it is the ocean so there’s no doubt there’s lots of sharks in the marina,” he said.

He said whenever a shark was spotted, the club took precautionary measures to ensure paddlers were aware of it.

Online comments:

Justin Scooter Andrews: Not that I was there but I’d lay money on it that that shark was a harmless shovel nose – nearly white dorsal fin, tapered back, triangulated shadow under water its head. It’s safe to go back in the water!

John Raiteri: Looks like a shovel nose, but if you guys don’t think the odd bull shark doesn’t venture into every marina, you’re kidding yourself.

Lynn Smith: We kayaked from Cannonvale to Shingley and back on Friday. Kids saw a few small shovel nose sharks, along with heaps of stingrays and turtles.

HARMLESS? A shark spotted in the marina near Shingley Beach.
