Bar talk over cup

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

EIGHT vessels competed in last Sunday’s Whitsunday Ocean Services Challengers’ Cup Series.

Blustery conditions with substantial wind shifts made for difficult racing.

An initial 40-degree shift meant that the leg angles of the trapezoid course didn’t allow spinnakers to be used on all the downhill legs and gybe sets were required at times which created difficulties for the crews.

To add to all this, a flat battery on the committee boat didn’t allow for the race management team to move the boat from the start location for the top of course finish.

The only solution was to shorten the course and finish the fleet where the committee boat was parked.

But the committee boat was not in the correct spot for a standard finish.

Confusion reigned with only three of the eight boats crossing the line correctly.

The intrepid finish boat crew decided to finish the fleet so as to give a fair result for all.

As expected heated discussions were the name of the game back in the bar. In the end the decision was made by all to accept the results so the race would not be abandoned.
