APPLE FOR THE TEACHER
Proserpine teacher voted ‘best in the world’
HE’S one in a million – at least to the students he teaches and their families.
Proserpine State School teacher Ryan Gilmour has been voted the region’s “fa- vourite” teacher across the Whitsundays and Mackay.
Last Friday, the Year 6 teacher was officially notified of his win and on Monday his entire school got to join in the fun.
While the Star 101.9 radio-led competition was officially about encouraging people to nominate the teacher they thought de- served that little bit of extra recognition, to Mr Gilmour’s students he’s simply the “best teacher in the world”.
FUN, sporty, the “best teacher in the world” – that’s how Proserpine State School Year Six students describe teacher Ryan Gilmour.
Last week Mr Gilmour received Star 101.9’s prize for being the “favourite” teacher in Mackay and the Whitsundays.
About 135,000 votes were cast altogether, and Star 101.9 spokeswoman Mikaela Bella said Mr Gilmour received “by far” the largest number of votes.
Year Six student Ryan Donnelly’s mother nominated Mr Gilmour for the prize.
“I always said (to mum) how he was a really good teacher,” he said. “(And) he was coming fourth after (just) a few days.”
Another of Mr Gilmour’s students, Mac Rogers, said each student in the class vot- ed almost every day for the four weeks the competition was running.
“We all voted for Mr G any chance we got, because we really thought the school and Mr G deserved the prizes,” Mac said.
Trixie Mickelborough said she voted for Mr Gilmour because he was just the “best teacher in the world”.
“He lets us have lots of fun and has a joke,” she said.
Mr Gilmour won an iPad and each member of his class won an iPod Shuffle and movie passes.
The school receives an iMac computer and a pallet of printer paper.
Mr Gilmour started teaching at Proserpine last year. “For a lot of them, I’m the first male teacher they’ve had... they like that I get out and play sport with them at lunchtime and handball,” he said.
