Airlie Beach beat Marion bowlers
Ladies’ day on Tuesday, May 10, Leone Ryan, Connie Reimers and Regina Aquilina shaped up to win by a healthy margin in a game of triples against Del Lacey, Louise Mahony and Noela Whitehead. The score was 18–6.
The reason for the low numbers in the social arena was a Round 2 game of triples in the competition amphitheatre.
Jenny Ryder, Henny Tattam and Margaret Heeney stood their ground and soundly defeated the team of Di Dobbins, Lane Telford and Elaine Hadlow. Tallies finished at 23–19.
Wednesday was men’s social games and with 12 available to play, two games of triples were the ideal.
Nik Fairbank, Jim Cairns and Paul Osborne pitted themselves against Steve Tattam, Dave Stock and Norm Campbell (all the way from Perth). It was a no contest as Nik, Jim and Paul took the win easily by scoring 27–17.
The second game of triples saw Tim Taylor, Ron Spence and John Sladek come out on top with a score of 22 against Keith Dunn, Barry Zillmann and Gary Dickson, also from Perth and only scoring an 11.
Once again the jackpot did not go off and with its rising worth the club might well be inundated with bowlers, not really interested in the bowling but just to have a crack at the jackpot.
A men’s A-singles competition was fought between Rick Galea and Rick Brunell with Rick Galea taking the prize by scoring a 25 and Rick Brunell scoring a 19.
The fourth round of Series 20 Business House Bowls was played in dry weather, unlike the week before where it lightly rained all night. The teams are starting to sort themselves into a more realistic line up with only The Mighties and Marine Provisioning in equal first place and Bendigo Community Bank and Whitsunday Transit in equal second place. Cold Rock, Fishing World, Big 4 Adventure Park and Woolies Allsorts are all running equal third with Porters and Best and Less running fourth and fifth. The next round should see a more strung out line up of challengers.
In the Men’s Pennant Division 2 challenge fourth round, Airlie Beach Bowls Club played against Marion Bowls Club on Saturday May 14 at home and the results were very pleasing.
Team number 1, Nik Fernbach, Steve Roome, Kevin Jewell and Nathan Harriett held themselves high and defeated the Marion 1 team 34–15.
Team number 2, Rick Galia, Steve Tattam, Bob McMahon and Man Isgro also had a good win against the Marion boys 29–12. Team Number 3, Derek Brown, Peter Lawton, David Dias and Andrew Bell drew their game with the Marion team at 16–all. This gave Airlie Beach a score of 79, aggregate score of + 36 and match points of 2.5.
BOWLING TIME: Ron Spence, Graeme Herd, Patsy Black and Connie Reimers on the green.
