Rock legends come to town
THE line-up for the 2016 Airlie Beach Festival of Music has dropped and there are some massive names on the bill.
Headlining the fourth annual festival will be a couple of legends of the music industry, with both Tim Finn, of Split Enz and Crowded House fame, and Richie Ramone, of the Ramones, set to spearhead the event.
In total there have been 74 acts announced for the festival, with organiser Gavin “Butto” Butlin working tirelessly behind the scenes. Butto said the process was never-ending.
“I was booking some of these bands before the last festival,” he said.
“Richie Ramone from the Ramones – everyone knows who the Ramones are but not many people really know their music. To have him coming is pretty huge. “Tim Finn’s massive.” Coming along for the ride will also be Troy Cassar-Daley, Sandi Thorn (in her only Australian show) and Daryl Braithwaite.
There will also be a return of all old favourites, including Wanita and Her Honky Tonk Bar Dwellers (“It wouldn’t be a festival without her”, Butto said) and Electrik Lemonade (“He’s been here since day dot”, Butto said).
Returning this year will also be the Airlie Battle of the Bands, which has been extended this year to include Wollongong, Tamworth and Melbourne.
Butto expects between 150200 bands to take part in the competition, with one winner from each of the 11 cities to play at the festival.
“Down the track we hope to make it national. In a couple years hopefully we’ll be doing New Zealand, Darwin, all over,” Butto said.
Additionally there is also one special competition added this year. The Whitsunday Chinatown Investment donated $5000 to find the perfect love song about the Whitsundays. Enter at airlie beachfestivalofmusic.com.au.
“If anyone wants to put a song in they still have a few more months. If you need a hand putting it on a CD we’ll help out, if you’ve written a song and want to record it, we can help out,” Butto said.
