Peter outfoxes in a double win
GOLF: The big winner of the Airlie Beach Hotel June monthly medal was Peter Fox, who scooped the pool in a great field of 85 players with a score of net 67, which had him also take out the B-grade title, beating Mark Thompson with a 68.
The A-grade title went to Chris Doblo, who beat Jake Nurse on countback with 71 each, while C-grade went to Benn Ryan (68), who beat Albert Pini on 70.
On Thursday, 49 players turned out for a Versus Par event with the Div 1 winner Barry Mortimer (+3), beating runner-up Paul Joice (+2), while Div 2 went to Vic Feldman (+2), beating Benn Ryan with a +1.
Perri Simpson won the 9hole competition with a great score of +4, beating Ron Thynne (+3).
This Saturday is the qualifier for Men’s Handicap Matchplay, with the top 32 players going into this championship event. It is a single stroke event with an early start and then a shotgun start at 11.30am.
Thursday players will be competing in a single stableford event in two divisions over 18 holes and a 9-hole event.
In ladies golf Trish McNeill was the big winner in Saturday’s Selena Clancy Beauty monthly medal for June, coming in with a net 72 to beat runner-up Jacqui Wall by one stroke on 73.
Wednesday’s McNeill Building monthly medal was won by Toni Clauss, who creamed the field with her net 71, ahead of runner-up Paula Wronski (75), with Anna Winterbourn (76), Wendy Bradley (77), and Marlene Gray and Mandy Patterson coming in with 78.
Sunday had another good roll-up to dawnies good to see our New Zealand, with a cold morning on the back nine seeing Beryl Nosworthy take the winner with a 59/39 and Tom Fleming runner-up with a 46/ 42 after a chip off with George Stevenson.
Also on a 42 net score, nearest the pin on 13 was Tony Spurway and on 16 Neil Hansen and Larry Muller both with birdies. The snake putter was Mark Cohen with least number of putts Larry Muller with 11 and Travis Clinch collected the bradmans with 58/ 58. Tony’s lucky net score was split four ways between Jill Ford, Vic Feldman, Clay Coles and Mick Burrows.
The Veterans competition featured another strong turn out with Beryl Miller taking the nine hole competition on 23.
Albert Pini wasn’t far behind on 20 with Alan Scott in the run down with 19.
Pins went to Ross Meade in the men and Mandy Patterson in the ladies.
Albert Pini avenged his second place with a win in the 18-hole competition with a 38.
He was closely followed by Ross Meade on 37 and Beryl Miller on 36.
