Elaine crowned open champion
BOWLS: Elaine Hadlow has been crowned the Airlie Bowls Ladies Open Singles Championship winner.
After playing several matches, it ended in a final play-off in which Hadlow came up against Ladda Purdie.
It just wasn’t Ladda’s day and she went down with a score of 12 against Elaine’s high score of 26.
Men’s day on Wednesday attracted 17 bowlers to the club and by using Rick Galea as a double lead they were able to play three games of triples.
First game and winners on the day with a score of 26 were Allan Perhouse, Tim Taylor and Nik Fernbach, opposing Paul Osborne, Graeme Herd and Peter Lawton on 14.
Rick Galea, David Stock and John Stark easily overcame Rick Galea (double lead), Ron Spence and John Sladek 20-14.
The final triples game was a near-match, with Herb Secomb, Russell Bramich and Jim Cairns defeating Bruce Purdie, Eddie Weston and Barry Zillmann 22-21.
Business House Bowls was called off due to the bowlers wanting to see Queensland beat New South Wales.
Saturday Scroungers featured 10 bowlers, Peter Lawton taking the win.
Division Two Men’s Pennants played Northern Beaches bowlers and gave them a real scare, with Airlie Beach claiming every game in a great sign of the club’s strength.
Team 1: Nik Fernbach, Steve Roome, Kevin Jewell and Bob McMahon 25-12 against the Northern Beaches team.
Team 2: A closer score but still a win – Rick Brunell, Steve Tattam, David Dias and Man Isgro 28-25.
Team 3: Herb Secomb, Rick Galea, Russell Bramich and John Stark defeated their opponents 18-15.
Sunday’s Ladies Open Pairs Championship featured Margo Stanley and Betty Nicolle against Elaine Hadlow and Di Dobbins. Margo and Betty won 26-21.
