Elaine crowned open cham­pion

BOWLS: Elaine Had­low has been crowned the Air­lie Bowls Ladies Open Sin­gles Cham­pi­onship win­ner.

Af­ter play­ing sev­eral matches, it ended in a fi­nal play-off in which Had­low came up against Ladda Pur­die.

It just wasn’t Ladda’s day and she went down with a score of 12 against Elaine’s high score of 26.

Men’s day on Wed­nes­day at­tracted 17 bowlers to the club and by us­ing Rick Galea as a dou­ble lead they were able to play three games of triples.

First game and win­ners on the day with a score of 26 were Al­lan Per­house, Tim Tay­lor and Nik Fern­bach, op­pos­ing Paul Os­borne, Graeme Herd and Peter Law­ton on 14.

Rick Galea, David Stock and John Stark eas­ily over­came Rick Galea (dou­ble lead), Ron Spence and John Sladek 20-14.

The fi­nal triples game was a near-match, with Herb Se­comb, Rus­sell Bramich and Jim Cairns de­feat­ing Bruce Pur­die, Ed­die We­ston and Barry Zill­mann 22-21.

Busi­ness House Bowls was called off due to the bowlers want­ing to see Queens­land beat New South Wales.

Satur­day Scroungers fea­tured 10 bowlers, Peter Law­ton tak­ing the win.

Di­vi­sion Two Men’s Pen­nants played North­ern Beaches bowlers and gave them a real scare, with Air­lie Beach claim­ing ev­ery game in a great sign of the club’s strength.

Team 1: Nik Fern­bach, Steve Roome, Kevin Jewell and Bob McMa­hon 25-12 against the North­ern Beaches team.

Team 2: A closer score but still a win – Rick Brunell, Steve Tat­tam, David Dias and Man Is­gro 28-25.

Team 3: Herb Se­comb, Rick Galea, Rus­sell Bramich and John Stark de­feated their op­po­nents 18-15.

Sun­day’s Ladies Open Pairs Cham­pi­onship fea­tured Margo Stan­ley and Betty Ni­colle against Elaine Had­low and Di Dob­bins. Margo and Betty won 26-21.
