Dow­ell takes big win be­fore rain halts play

GOLF: Be­fore the Proser­pine golf course went un­der wa­ter fol­low­ing Sun­day’s big wet, play­ers man­aged to get Satur­day’s Ho­tel Metropole monthly Stable­ford com­pleted with a big win to Jim Dow­ell with 42 points.

In the field of 64 play­ers, run­ner-up on count­back was Peter Spiers who beat Peter Lewis, The­u­nis Ven­ter and Matt Gold­man, all on 40 points, ahead of a run­down in­clud­ing Ben Smith (39), An­drew But­ler and Jim Cochrane (38).

The ladies Paya-spon­sored Stable­ford event was won by Wendy Bradley, who beat JoAnn Muller on count­back, both with 33, while El­speth Scot­ford (31), He­len Deighton (30) and Tina Baden­horst (29) made up the run­down.

Ladies NTPs went to Elina Kor­nis on 9, and Tina Baden­horst on 13.

The Thurs­day stroke com­pe­ti­tion was fought out among only 26 play­ers due to early rain.

Win­ner of the 18-hole Divi­sion 1 field was Rob Stan­ley (72), ahead of run­ner-up Mark Thomp­son on 74, while the Divi­sion 2 ti­tle went to Ben Mo­ran (75), beat­ing John Dodds into run­ner-up po­si­tion with 77.

The nine-hole com­pe­ti­tion was won by Mark Thomp­son (35), ahead of run­ner-up Fin­bar O’Flynn (36), and Rob Stan­ley (37).
