Matches galore for Airlie Bowls
BOWLS: The Airlie Beach Bowls ladies have been busy with Pennant games lately and are doing well in the two divisions.
Last Tuesday, Division 3 met St Helens Bowls Club for round four.
Team 1 Jenny Ryder, Regina Aqualina, Betty Nicolle and Margo Stanley beat St Helens 27-15. Team 2 Henny Tattam, Ladda Purdie, Jill Spencer and Elaine Hadlow also beat St Helens 30-7.
Overall scores were 57 to 22, with an aggregate score of +35.
On the same day, against Seaforth Bowls Club, Team 1 lost 12-19. Team 2 scored 28 against Seaforth’s number 2 on 15, giving an aggregate score of +6 to Airlie.
Division 4 played North Mackay Bowls Club. Team 1 Elaine Kippen, Connie Reimers, Di Dobbins and Lane Telford claimed a 26 to 18 victory.
Team number 2 of Division 4, round three, Louise Mahony. Julie Stark, Margret Heeney and Val Hadley only just beat North Mackay 22-20. This gave the girls a 10 aggregate advantage, but their battle was not over as they then met Marian Bowls Club in round four. Elaine Kippen, Connie Reimers, Di Dobbins and Lane Telford continued the streak against Marian team 1 and won 24-21.
Airlie’s number 2 team beat Marian 22-20. Aggregate score for Airlie Beach +5.
Last Thursday at St Helens Bowls Club Division 3 played round five. The Tattam, Purdie, Spencer, Hadlow team beat St Helens 23-21. Team 2, Ryder, Aquillina, Nicolle and Stanley narrowly lost to St Helens by one but the overall aggregate favoured Airlie +1.
Other competitions were the Men’s B singles. Rick Brunell played against Rick Galea last Wednesday in the first round with Brunell winning 26-19.
Wednesday was men’s day with 17 men and one brave lady including two visitors from Mornington and Moonta making up three sets of triples.
Winners were Barry Zillmann, Ron Spence and Bob Fenney who produced 33 points against Eric Bottle, John Sladek and John Munn on 19.
Bob Spees, Jim Cairns and James Argo narrowly beat Glen Goddard, Bob Smeeton and Herb Secomb by two.
Nik Fernbach, Kevin Sorrell and Marjorie Munn drew against Tim Taylor, David Stock and Rick Galea, both on 22.
The jackpot still stands intact and is growing every week. Ladies “A” pairs final was played on Saturday. Betty Nicolle and Margo Stanley played Elaine Kippen and Ladda Purdie winning 17-13.
In the afternoon 17 bowlers joined in a Scroungers game. Winner Christine Cunningham, a new bowler to the Scroungers, claimed the money.
