Matches galore for Air­lie Bowls

BOWLS: The Air­lie Beach Bowls ladies have been busy with Pennant games lately and are do­ing well in the two di­vi­sions.

Last Tues­day, Divi­sion 3 met St He­lens Bowls Club for round four.

Team 1 Jenny Ry­der, Regina Aqualina, Betty Ni­colle and Margo Stan­ley beat St He­lens 27-15. Team 2 Henny Tat­tam, Ladda Pur­die, Jill Spencer and Elaine Had­low also beat St He­lens 30-7.

Over­all scores were 57 to 22, with an ag­gre­gate score of +35.

On the same day, against Seaforth Bowls Club, Team 1 lost 12-19. Team 2 scored 28 against Seaforth’s num­ber 2 on 15, giv­ing an ag­gre­gate score of +6 to Air­lie.

Divi­sion 4 played North Mackay Bowls Club. Team 1 Elaine Kip­pen, Con­nie Reimers, Di Dob­bins and Lane Telford claimed a 26 to 18 vic­tory.

Team num­ber 2 of Divi­sion 4, round three, Louise Ma­hony. Julie Stark, Mar­gret Heeney and Val Hadley only just beat North Mackay 22-20. This gave the girls a 10 ag­gre­gate ad­van­tage, but their bat­tle was not over as they then met Mar­ian Bowls Club in round four. Elaine Kip­pen, Con­nie Reimers, Di Dob­bins and Lane Telford con­tin­ued the streak against Mar­ian team 1 and won 24-21.

Air­lie’s num­ber 2 team beat Mar­ian 22-20. Ag­gre­gate score for Air­lie Beach +5.

Last Thurs­day at St He­lens Bowls Club Divi­sion 3 played round five. The Tat­tam, Pur­die, Spencer, Had­low team beat St He­lens 23-21. Team 2, Ry­der, Aquil­lina, Ni­colle and Stan­ley nar­rowly lost to St He­lens by one but the over­all ag­gre­gate favoured Air­lie +1.

Other com­pe­ti­tions were the Men’s B sin­gles. Rick Brunell played against Rick Galea last Wed­nes­day in the first round with Brunell win­ning 26-19.

Wed­nes­day was men’s day with 17 men and one brave lady in­clud­ing two vis­i­tors from Morn­ing­ton and Moonta mak­ing up three sets of triples.

Win­ners were Barry Zill­mann, Ron Spence and Bob Fen­ney who pro­duced 33 points against Eric Bot­tle, John Sladek and John Munn on 19.

Bob Spees, Jim Cairns and James Argo nar­rowly beat Glen God­dard, Bob Smee­ton and Herb Se­comb by two.

Nik Fern­bach, Kevin Sor­rell and Mar­jorie Munn drew against Tim Tay­lor, David Stock and Rick Galea, both on 22.

The jack­pot still stands in­tact and is grow­ing ev­ery week. Ladies “A” pairs fi­nal was played on Satur­day. Betty Ni­colle and Margo Stan­ley played Elaine Kip­pen and Ladda Pur­die win­ning 17-13.

In the af­ter­noon 17 bowlers joined in a Scroungers game. Win­ner Chris­tine Cun­ning­ham, a new bowler to the Scroungers, claimed the money.
