Recycling proposal is carried

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A NOVEL solution to the region’s recycling issues was presented to Whitsunday Regional Council by ACT Whitsundays on Wednesday.

The motion put forward at the council meeting, which was passed unanimously, involved the use of council libraries as collection points for “hard to recycle waste”.

The kind of waste would include: oral care packaging, skin care packaging, coffee capsules and mail satchel recycling.

ACT Whitsundays is a small local charity group that has been working with TerraCycle, a “global leader in recycling”.

Collection bins would be deposited at libraries in the Whitsundays and then be collected by ACT Whitsundays and forwarded to TerraCycle for recycling.

Council supported the idea but suggested libraries were not the preferred collection point.

“Council (will) work with ACT Whitsundays to find an alternative location across the region to host their project in conjunction with council’s waste strategy,” the minutes read.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting council unanimously approved a climate change and adaptation policy.

In a press release issued once the motion was passed, Mayor Andrew Willcox said the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy was designed to “guide council’s response to the effects of climate change”.
