TRAGEDY ON LOCAL ROAD

Whitsunday Times - - FRONT PAGE -

THE identity of a 20-year-old woman killed in a car crash at Strathdickie on Tuesday night has not yet been released.

Some initial media reports suggested the woman was from the Sunshine Coast, but Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain of the Whitsunday Police confirmed yesterday she lived in Cannonvale.

Snr Sgt Blain said a number of factors would be considered in the investigation, with police back at the scene yesterday to assess the area.

“Investigators are looking at a number of different options including driver error, weather conditions and road design,” he said.

Preliminary information suggests it was about 9.50pm on Tuesday when the vehicle the woman was driving left the Gregory Cannon Valley Road and crashed into a power pole.

The woman was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene.

A report is currently being prepared for the coroner.

The car has been removed from the scene by police and will be examined by motor vehicle inspectors to determine whether there were any mechanical contributing factors.

Snr Sgt Blain noted this was a tragic reminder to drive to the conditions, with ongoing rain in the Whitsundays over the past week.

“Take care wherever you’re going,” he said.
