AFTER running a creative arts festival in Brisbane for the last 17 years, Wendy Wilson will be bringing the first ever edition to the Whitsundays next year.

The Whitsundays Creative Arts Festival will be a week long event featuring six days of creative workshops taught by professionals from across the world, galleries and displays, a fashion show, a large shop with unique items and much more.

This weekend, locals will get their first chance to see what the festival is all about with the Whitsunday Retreat running Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

There will be a free open day on Friday and Saturday at the Palm House that will feature many of the original projects for the 2017 event. There will be an embroidery and felting supplies shop with unique products brought in by their tutors.

From Friday to Tuesday there will also be the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops.

Ms Wilson said there had already been 90 interstate bookings for the festival next year.

“We’ll be bringing tutors in from Austria, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and all over Australia to teach these workshops,” she said.

“From beginners to advance, if people have never tried anything before, there will be things they can do.”

One of the biggest drawcards will be the embroidery and textiles shop that Ms Wilson said would feature items “people can’t get anywhere”.

The galleries will feature 100’s of original pieces. For more information about this weekend visit www.koalaconven or call 0408 813 920.

NEW BEGINNING: The retreat will feature workshops and an open day as a preview to next year's festival.
