ONE YEAR AGO...

Whitsunday Times - - WELCOME -

THE state lockout laws were a big talking point at this time last year.

While the laws have now started coming into effect, many business owners in Airlie Beach fought against the changes.

The laws include a 1am lockout, meaning patrons who leave after this time will not be allowed back into licensed venues.

At the time, Mama Africa nightclub owner Stacy Harvey said she believed the LNP Government’s Safe Night Out Strategy, of which Airlie Beach is a part, had been the most successful campaign to curb alcohol-fuelled violence.

She said the strategy had seen a 23.5% drop in assaults since July 2014, according to figures from Whitsunday Police.

Ms Harvey and the Airlie Beach Safe Night Precinct team suggested this strategy was more effective than the then proposed lockout laws.
