Potential for local jobs
New hopes for ‘satellite’ Adani offices

ADANI’S rail and port infrastructure may lie within the Whitsunday Regional Council area, but Mayor Andrew Willcox has been told the region doesn’t fit the criteria for the Carmichael coal mine headquarters.
“They wanted a regional city,” Cr Willcox said. “We didn’t fit the criteria.”
But he hoped if Mackay secured the mining headquarters and up to 125 jobs it would bring, the Whitsundays would host satellite offices at Bowen or Abbot Point.
While he wasn’t sure how many jobs a satellite office would bring the region, he put the idea to Adani delegates last Tuesday.
That’s when he travelled to Mackay to be part of Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson’s push to secure Adani’s mining headquarters.
“Every time we can get a regional city outside of the south-east corner, it’s a good thing for us,” he said.
An Adani spokesman confirmed it was meeting with regional councils to discuss the potential employment and logistic hub opportunities moving forward.
He reiterated that, subject to resolving ongoing appeals and approvals certainty, it was working to commence construction in 2017.
When approached by The Whitsunday Times last Thursday, neither the Rockhampton Regional Council or Townsville City Council confirmed it had also pitched for the Adani headquarters recently.
Rockhampton Regional Council acting Mayor Cherie Rutherford said it continuously met with potential investors, big and small, on a regular basis.
“Adani has committed to supporting regional cities so it is vital that we are proactive and positive about servicing their needs,” she said.
Townsville City Council was contacted but did not respond by deadline.
Adani will not make a decision on its mining headquarters location until approvals are finalised.
