ONE YEAR AGO...
IN THIS edition one year ago today, the Whitsunday community was venting anger at Whitsunday Regional Council’s draft planning scheme.
The proposed scheme included a plan to lift building height restrictions to four, eight and 12 storeys around Airlie Beach with opinion split on whether it would ruin Airlie’s village-style feel or be a necessary step to ensure the growth of the town.
As a result of the public response, council extended the submission period by two weeks with a number of community members unhappy over a perceived lack of consultation.
The extension was announced after a community meeting at the Whitsunday PCYC with vocal opposition to the plan.
“So they want to turn this into the Gold Coast?” said one attendee, voicing the opinion of many.
