IN THIS edi­tion one year ago to­day, Whit­sun­day Re­gional Coun­cil and the Whit­sun­day com­mu­nity were gear­ing up for the in­au­gu­ral Mayor’s Char­ity Mas­quer­ade Ball to raise funds for the Black Dog In­sti­tute.

For­mer mayor Jennifer Whit­ney spoke of her own ex­pe­ri­ences with sui­cide after learn­ing that a close friend had passed away. “Even sav­ing one life would make it all worth it,” Cr Whit­ney said.

Held at the Proser­pine En­ter­tain­ment Cen­tre, Cr Whit­ney said she hoped the night could go some way to mak­ing a dif­fer­ence.

“The Black Dog In­sti­tute is a not-for-profit or­gan­i­sa­tion and a world leader in the di­ag­no­sis, treat­ment and pre­ven­tion of men­tal ill­ness,” she said.

The night fea­tured a char­ity auc­tion in­clud­ing a framed signed jer­sey from North Queens­land Cow­boys.
