Golf club smashed but close to tee off

GOLF: The Proserpine Golf Club may have been inundated by rain during Cyclone Debbie but members are hopeful they will have the front nine open in the next week.

The club reported that 60–90cm of water went under the clubhouse and into the pro shop during the cyclone.

There have also been a number of trees down on the course with the damage unable to be completely assessed.

“Everything possible will be done to make the club bigger and better than ever” a statement on its Facebook page said.

Proserpine Golf Club pro Kane Nusterling said the front nine was coming along nicely and they hoped to play soon.

“I believe it is good and we are hopeful the front nine will open within a week.

“We may have to get some professionals to work on the back nine but most of the clean-up for the front nine is done,” he said.

The pro shop will move upstairs while the bottom level is repaired.

Greenkeeper Rob Stanley said there was still a mammoth task ahead to repair the whole course.

“We’ve been flat out. There’s a lot of safety issues, a lot of uprooted trees,” he said.

“The staff here and a few volunteers are getting rid of the timber off the course and then we can come back in with our rough mowers and slashers to do the back nine.”

Mr Stanley said there would be a meeting with Golf Queensland tonight to see what assistance they could provide but he said he admitted he had “no idea” when the back nine might be playable.

You can keep up to date on when the club is opened by following the Proserpine Golf Shop Facebook page.
