Post Debbie rebuild
SIX weeks on from Cyclone Debbie, home owners will be looking to make good some of the damage created by the most recent severe weather event to hit the Whitsundays.
The following is a go-to guide for home-owners accessing the services of tradies.
THE Queensland Building and Construction Commission has a great database of local licensed contractors which can be found by going to qbcc.qld.gov.au.
The directory allows you to choose a category of building work and then select a kilometre radius from a postcode. This will provide you with a list of local contractors who may be able to help with repair work.
A list of local contractors and suppliers can also be found by contacting the Queensland Master Builders Association and the Housing Industry Association.
It is a good idea to ask the contractor for details of similar past work and recent clients to check the quality of their work. Remember to make sure the contractor is licensed to perform the work and try to use local tradies. You can carry out a licence search at: www.qbcc.
AS A HOME owner getting contract work done, it is advised there is a contract in place.
Contracts are legal requirements and they help to protect you during the repair and rebuilding process. It is required for all work valued over $3300. It is also strongly recommended to enter into a contract for work below $3300.
IF IT IS possible that a property has asbestos in it the most important message is: Do not attempt to remove it yourself.
Properties built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos fibro sheeting. It is very difficult to tell by looking at fibro sheeting whether it contains asbestos or not. If you think there may be asbestos in your home, call the Whitsunday Regional Council or Workplace Health and Safety Queensland on 1300 362 128
Do not disturb or break it as asbestos fibres may be released. Specialists who remove asbestos are licensed by WHSQ.
ROOF FIX: A roofer works on the exterior of a home.
Contracts are legal requirements and they help to protect you during the repair and rebuilding process.
