Big smiles for our Under-8s Day
Whitsunday schools get a day of fun
SCHOOLS and kids around the region celebrated Under-Eights Week last week.
Both Cannonvale State School and Whitsunday Christian College held a day of activities on Friday to get kids learning through play.
Angela Heffernan, master teacher at Cannonvale State School, said the school had community groups as well as 400 students from Prep to Grade Two participating in a variety of activities to celebrate.
“We have face painting, fruit loop threading, biscuit making, pirate scavenger hunt, bubbles, play dough and lots of fun stuff. We have community dental, Whitsunday Family Daycare and we did have the local fire brigade and our local adopt-a-cop. The kids really enjoyed meeting them,” she said.
“It’s been an extreme success. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together and have a good time.
“It’s great for them to get out and just play. At Cannonvale, we’re very supportive of play-based (learning) and the importance of children learning communication and educational skills through play. It’s a great way for them to get out and socialise with each other and bring families together.”
Whitsunday Christian College foundation phase coordinator Elmarie van der Westhuizen said it was always a day of fun and activities.
Their activities included a jumping castle, obstacle course, playdough and chalk drawing, Aboriginal dot paintings, masks, a mock camp and storytime.
“It’s been running for years and every year we celebrate it, and this year it was about learning through play,” she said.
“We have a sausage sizzle and in the afternoon we got together and watched a movie. It was lovely weather, and a great way to celebrate.”
This year’s theme was celebrating play from Country to Coast.
