Golfers return to green Saturday
GOLF: Golf got away again on Saturday after another frustrating weather delay that resulted in cancelled games earlier in the week.
The ladies’ and men’s competitions were both single stableford events, played twice around the front nine holes.
The ladies’ was won by Elina Kornis with 33 points. The runner-up was Jill Farinelli on a countback from Lyn Muller, both on 29.
In the rundown were Paula McQuat, 28, Beryl Nosworthy and Penny Wardroper, both with 26.
Nearest the pin was Robyn Mills on hole nine.
Meanwhile, 46 men turned out and the clear winner was George Steane with 41 points, ahead of runner-up Wayne Temby on 39.
Three followed on 38, being Andy Pearson, Paul Douthwaite and Matt Goldman. Completing the rundown were Bruce Fielder, Nic Langevad, Paul Joice, Kelvin Stephens and Peter Fox, all with 37 points.
The nearest the pin shots were won by Matt Beach on hole one, Paul Joice on two, Paul Douthwaite on four and Warren Deighton on nine.
Next week’s matches are: Wednesday Ladies, Reef Gateway stableford; Thursday Men, single stableford.
Saturday, June 3, will be ladies’ and men’s monthly medals.
The Veterans golfers returned on Tuesday after some weather-interrupted weeks, with Peter Fox winning the 18-hole stableford with 40.
With 25 entrants, Steve New was second with 39 on a countback from Steven Papas.
Fox was also too good in the nine-hole competition, winning with 23. Steve New came runner-up on 21 and Peter Browning third on a countback from Michael Burrows on 19.
