Golfers re­turn to green Satur­day

GOLF: Golf got away again on Satur­day af­ter an­other frus­trat­ing weather de­lay that re­sulted in can­celled games ear­lier in the week.

The ladies’ and men’s com­pe­ti­tions were both sin­gle stable­ford events, played twice around the front nine holes.

The ladies’ was won by Elina Kor­nis with 33 points. The run­ner-up was Jill Farinelli on a count­back from Lyn Muller, both on 29.

In the run­down were Paula McQuat, 28, Beryl Nos­wor­thy and Penny Wardroper, both with 26.

Near­est the pin was Robyn Mills on hole nine.

Mean­while, 46 men turned out and the clear win­ner was Ge­orge Steane with 41 points, ahead of run­ner-up Wayne Temby on 39.

Three fol­lowed on 38, be­ing Andy Pear­son, Paul Douth­waite and Matt Gold­man. Com­plet­ing the run­down were Bruce Fielder, Nic Langevad, Paul Joice, Kelvin Stephens and Peter Fox, all with 37 points.

The near­est the pin shots were won by Matt Beach on hole one, Paul Joice on two, Paul Douth­waite on four and War­ren Deighton on nine.

Next week’s matches are: Wed­nes­day Ladies, Reef Gate­way stable­ford; Thurs­day Men, sin­gle stable­ford.

Satur­day, June 3, will be ladies’ and men’s monthly medals.


The Vet­er­ans golfers re­turned on Tues­day af­ter some weather-in­ter­rupted weeks, with Peter Fox win­ning the 18-hole stable­ford with 40.

With 25 en­trants, Steve New was sec­ond with 39 on a count­back from Steven Pa­pas.

Fox was also too good in the nine-hole com­pe­ti­tion, win­ning with 23. Steve New came run­ner-up on 21 and Peter Brown­ing third on a count­back from Michael Bur­rows on 19.
