Former Origin greats donate to Brahmans
RUGBY LEAGUE: Queensland’s former State of Origin greats have chipped in to support the cyclone-ravaged Proserpine Whitsunday Junior Rugby League.
At their annual charity lunch last Tuesday at Suncorp Stadium, FOGS donated $7500 to help the club recover following Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
After opening their new clubhouse to celebrate their 50th anniversary last year, the Proserpine juniors’ headquarters were hit hard.
Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan used his former ties to rugby league to get the ball rolling.
A total of $15,000 was donated to junior rugby league in the region, with a further $7500 going to the Bowen Seagulls.
Proserpine Whitsunday Junior Rugby League secretary Leanne Hoffman said it was a surprise.
“We don’t know what we’re going to do with it,” she said.
It was a devastating cyclone for the juniors, with a number of memorabilia items destroyed.
“We’ve had a fair bit of water damage... we lost some really valuable memorabilia. There were some photos of Sam Faust that got wet. It’s hard to replace some things.”
