Fightback not enough

SOCCER: A nail-biting game between the Whitsunday Football Club’s Premier Men’s team and the Lions on Saturday ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Lions took a 1-0 lead early in the second half at the Whitsunday Sportspark but two goals in quick succession to Joe Fletcher and Nathan Sothmann gave the home side a 2-1 lead before a penalty levelled the scores.

Club manager and player, Anthony Nobilia, said the score was “fair”.

“Perhaps we’re a team who’s slightly stronger towards the end,” he said.

“I think some teams find that hard to deal with.”

The team had a penalty awarded against them – a setback in the game.

As for stand-out players, Nobilia said Jayden Tween played an excellent game in the back line.

“He was pretty much everywhere and decisive when he needed to be,” he said.

“We’re concentrating on playing as a team, and it’s really showing how well we play together.”

The Reserve Men’s team was defeated by Lions 5-0 while the women’s team was also defeated 11-0 in hot conditions.

This weekend games will be played in Mackay.
